Teaching Children to Pray

Prayer means talking to God:

Prayer is simply being with God and having a conversation like you would have with your mom or dad.

There´s Always Something to Pray About:

One way to avoid the “nothing to pray for” or “praying is boring” complaint is to pray differently by using prayer targets and making prayer activities. Play “Musical Prayers.” Place chairs in a circle. Tape a prayer target to each chair. Play music and have everyone walk around the chairs. When the music stops, each person finds the nearest chair and prays for the need represented on that chair.

You also can use an inflatable world globe to pass it from person to person. When the music stops, the person holding the globe can choose a country and pray for the children in that country to know about Jesus.

Prayer is about what you say not the way you say it:

Children need freedom to talk to God in different postures: sitting, standing, kneeling, marching, or bowing. As Jeremiah 33:3 says: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

Tips for Praying With Children

Give a Heart to Heart: Share a special time that you prayed and received the answer in a surprising or dramatic way.

Pray on the Spot: The next time a child comes to you with a problem or worry, instead of saying, “I will pray for you,” do it right then. Even if it is a short prayer, you will be demonstrating the important principle that God wants us to cast the care of all our concerns on Him and pray about everything. (See 1 Peter 5:7 and Philippians 4:6-7.)

Teach them to Pray Blessings

Pray a prayer of blessing each night at bedtime (or other times of the day) Pray a blessing over Mommy & Daddy, pray for protection and peace.

Thanksgiving

An BIG part of prayer is simply saying, “Thank You, God.” Thank Him for the big things the little things. He loves when we thank Him. Thank the Lord for something specific – a gift, talent, or quality you have been given by Him.
